"Fortune" declare : AT&T Testing Huawei Smartphones for Network Compatibility

Now Huawei is facing up to one of the big realities of the U.S. phone market: most phone sales still go through the carriers. To crack the U.S. market, Huawei has been offering higher end models with premium features like Leica cameras. Five years ago, Chinese telecommunications equipment giant Huawei sold barely 1% of mobile phones worldwide. An initial strategy of cozying up to Google flopped and a more recent attempt based on selling unlocked phones via online retailers did little to move the needle. The Chinese manufacturer is in the early stages of having AT&T approve its proprietary Kirin mobile phone chip set for use on AT&T's network, according to a person familiar with the situation.


As it stated in Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is hoping to crack into the U.S. market by working with Dallas-based AT&T, according to reports by The Information and Fortune. Huawei, which has a U.S. headquarters in Plano, is the world's third largest smartphone maker, after Samsung and Apple. Last year, Huawei made up nearly 10 percent of the global smartphone market. Richard Yu, who leads Huawei's consumer electronics unit, told Fortune that the Chinese smartphone maker would like to surpass Apple's sales -- and its market share of 15 percent -- in 2018. In the U.S., Huawei accounts for less than .04 percent of the market, Fortune said.
