Huawei India Director for Product Centre Allen Wang says that the company has "overtook Apple in global sales volume share in December". Huawei reportedly claims to have surpassed Apple in terms of global sales volume. According to numbers revealed by the company, Huawei accounted for 13.2 percent of the handset market share globally in December 2016. On the other hand, Apple, its only close competitor that time owned around 12 percent of the global market. Though Samsung leads the global market in volumes, Huawei has overtaken the Korean technology major in some markets, Wang said.

CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group Richard Yu has been outspoken about the company's aims to supersede Apple in global smartphone shipments, putting a two-year time-frame on the prospect in comments made last November. Sales numbers are difficult to calculate and Huawei's version of last December's smartphone market might be very different to Apple's.
